11 weeks old

By Cyndi
Feb 28, 2011

Since there are (and will be) some other posts this week, I will try to keep this as short as possible.

The boys are going 9 hours between feedings at night which is perfect for when I go back to work.  Here's our future schedule ...

Feed at 4a, 7a, 10a, 1p, 4p & 7p
Hopefully if they sleep through the night (which Zach mostly does every night and Tyler usually fusses once and just needs his paci) will give me 6-7 hours of sleep each night!  Wish us luck, please.

Speaking of work, I head back in less than two weeks.  I am a bit nervous, but excited to be moving around a little more.  The boys start day care in one week and since we have them there until 6pm on Wednesdays & Thursdays, I will be able to come home from work, pump, workout & shower before needing to pick them up.  Since I still have 30 lbs to lose, I need to start working out 4+ days per week.

Both boys are eating anywhere from 4 to 6 ounces during the day, with a total of 24-28oz breast milk & formula.  This is perfect to continue their growth.

We are now starting to think about our trip back to Chicago in one month where T & Z will finally meet GG (The Gram now known as Great Gram!) and hopefully Aunt Lauren, & Great Uncle Jim, Great Aunt Jo & cousin Jessie along with all of our Chicago area friends!!!  I am already stressed just thinking about all of the items we will need to bring.

And since there were no pictures last week, here's a few ...
Our  running stroller ... still a little small, but hopefully by May, they will be big enough to go for a walk!!!

Zach's painted toes (oops, he moved) & our way to ensure we don't mix T & Z

Lincoln (our godson) and a look into a future one year from now TIMES TWO!!

10 Weeks Old & How are twins made?

By Cyndi
February 22, 2011

This weekly post will be a update from last week, along with an educational section on "How Twins are Made"

Week 10 Update

I have scored big on diapers (see previous post).  I thought we'd receive atleast 10 guesses, so I am holding out another day or two before I post how much I paid and how I did it (Laura -- I will give you all the details!!)

At the 2 month visit, both boys were given prescriptions to Zantac, for the reflux.  This will not prevent them from spitting up, but will make it less painful for them.  A few times per day, each of them would have reflux, turn red, arch their back and scream (not cry, SCREAM).  We made an unscheduled visit to the pediatrician last Friday since Zach's diaper rash not cleared up and to discuss his prescription to Zantac, because it didn't seem to be helping (Tyler has responded well and we see it in his face that it is happening, but he doesn't seem to be in pain).  We were given another diaper cream regime & increased Zach's  Zantac to three times per day.  As of today, their tushies look MUCH better ... the best they've look since they came home from the NICU & are doing much better with the reflux.

I've spent a ton of time cleaning out my closet to get rid of clothes from .... oh .... sophomore/junior year in college.  I haven't worn them in years and was finally able to part ways.  We now have two boxes of stuff for donation!!

Last week we also met with Rahima, the day care provider.  We have a list of the items we need to bring with and have the schedule figured out.  T & Z will be headed there T, W, & TH afternoon and all day on Friday.  Daddy Daycare will be in full swing ALL DAY Mondays!!  Mommy Daycare is all weekend long.  It is a total of 25 hours at daycare and will hopefully cover enough time that Matt and I can get a few things done at the house and errands without them, so when they are home, we can focus on them.  I think this will be essential when they become mobile .... ugg, must I even suggest that we will have two crawling babies.  We will need to start baby proofing sooner than we know!

Now, onto the educational section of how twins are made ... read it all, it's good stuff with something you may want to know at the end!

How Twins are Made
We are asked all the time whether Tyler & Zachary are fraternal or identical and we have the same response: we don't know.  Here's what we do know:  two sacs, same blood type.  Yup, that's it!  We don't know if it was one placenta or two fused together.

And now for the education:  (borrowed from another MoM - mom of multiples blog)

Fraternal twins are the result of two eggs and two sperm.  99.99999% of the time, boy/girl twins are fraternal.  Fraternal twins are ALWAYS dichorionic/diamniotic. This means they each have their own amniotic sacs and each have their own chorionic sacs, along with their own placentas. (However, placentas can fuse during pregnancy.)

Identical twins are the result of one egg splitting.  When it splits determines a lot.

-If the egg splits after 13 days of fertilization it will result in monochorionic/monoamniotic. Sharing one sac and conjoined twins may result. (1 Egg, 2 babies, 1 Sac, 1 Placenta)

-If the eggs splits between 8 and 13 days after fertilization it will result in monochorionic/monoamniotic. Sharing one sac and will run the risk of the cord tangling. (1 Egg, 2 babies, 1 Sac, 1 Placenta)

-If the egg splits between 3 and 8 days after fertilization it will result in monochorionic/diamniotic.  Each having their own amniotic sacs but sharing one chorion and sharing one placenta. (1 Egg, 2 babies, 2 Sacs, 1 Placanta)

-If the egg splits 3-4 days after fertilization it will result in dichorionic/diamniotic.  Each in their own sacs and have their own placenta (however, the placenta can fuse) (1 Egg, 2 babies, 2 Sacs, 2 Placantae)

You see the last possibility is the same as fraternal twins (2 Eggs, 2 Babies, 2 Sacs, 2 Placentae).  If you have dichorionic/diamniotic twins the doctors do not know whether it resulted from two eggs or one egg splitting, therefore the only way to be 100% sure that they are fraternal or identical is to do a DNA test. (Unless they are boy/girl twins, then you know they are fraternal)

The DNA test is in the mail.  Hopefully in three weeks, we should know the results!!

(interactive post) Diapers - how much do you think I spent?

By Cyndi
February 19, 2011

I never thought I would say this, but I said to Matt this morning, "After this order, I promise to not buy diapers for a month."  I know I have mentioned this before, but on average we go through 16 diapers per day and at a retail price of $0.23 each, it adds up very quickly.  Right now, we have on-hand over 500 size one diapers which will take us until the boys are around 12lbs (~1.5 months, about the time we could move them to size two diapers).

I want you to guess how much I just spent this morning on the following purchase:  3 boxes of 184 Size 2 Pampers Swaddlers (total of 552 diapers).

HOW MUCH DID I SPEND??
Please submit a comment and in a few days, I will reveal the answer.
Note:  Comments will not show up immediately.

Thanks for playing & pictures have been updated.  Link is to the right.  I can't wait to see everyone's guesses!!!

PS.  Stacie, you are sadly disqualified from this contest as you were consulted regarding this purchase.  In exchange, you can continue to stop by and hold cranky, gassy babies whenever!

9 weeks old & Month Two memories

By Cyndi
February 15, 2011

Let's tell you about our week in pictures followed by our month two memories ....
Attended another fun 1st birthday party where Princess Petyon decided she wanted to share some cake with her daddy

Family Picture - 2 months old (Matt is holding Tyler & I am holding Zachary)

Feb. 13, 2011 - Two Months Old

Meigs and his new friend, Atticus, Daniel & Jill's 12 week old puppy (Matt's brother & girlfriend who live in DC)

Nana (Matt's mom) came for a long weekend to see her sons & grandbabies

Here's a few things we don't want to forget about how life is with the boys at two months old ...
- Eating 7 times per day (nursing twice & 5 - 4oz bottles)
- Sleeping 6+ hour stretches at night
- Officially moved into Size 1 diapers on 2/13/2011
- Loving car rides
- Grunting all day long
- Official weights: Tyler 8lb 8oz (4th percentile) & Zachary 8lb 15oz (10th percentile)
- Official lengths: Tyler 21.5" (10th percentile) & Zachary 22" (20th percentile)
- Only smiling when gassy or sleeping
- Wearing newborn sleepers but have moved into 0-3 month onesies
- Loving to look at lights
- Hating tummy time so much that they move themselves in circles
- The help of local friends for dinners, holding them when we are out & their amazement that we are somewhat rested (Note:  I am not working yet, let's review this again at 4 months)
- How my IE degree pays off in the scheduling and logistics of feeding two babies with reflux & gas, especially when you are home alone AND pumping to give them the "good stuff"
- The amount of herbal supplements I am taking to give them some breast milk in every bottle (18 pills a day)

8 weeks old

By Cyndi
February 8, 2011

Am I allowed to say that the past week has been somewhat of a blur??!! With around 4 weeks left until I go back to work, I'm trying to get out of the house more often with Matt and by myself. Here's a few updates:

They have (almost) doubled their birth weights!!!
Stats from latest pediatrician visit:

Days Old Tyler Zachary
Weight Birth 12/13/10
4lb 1oz 3lb 14oz

Come Home 12/27/10 14 4lb 13oz 5lb 2oz

1 Month 01/19/11 37 6lb 14 oz 7lb 0oz

1.5 Months 02/02/11 51 7lb 14oz 8lb 4oz

The overall visit went well. It was mentioned to us to pay attention to their heads as Tyler has a flat spot on his left side and may have torticollis (tightening of neck muscles - could be from his inactivity in the womb - click here for more info) . Since then we have been trying to move his head around while sleeping, do as much tummy time as we can schedule in, and more sitting up in the corners of the couch. We head back next week for their official 2 month appointment including the first round of shots.

I went to a breastfeeding clinic with the boys since I have been struggling with the pump. They gave some suggestions and things have improved but not enough. I'll be heading back tomorrow for some more help. I need this figured out before I go back to work since I will be relying on the pump to do its job for many hours during the day.

On Saturday, we celebrated a friend's son's first birthday. The boys behaved very well and were dressed in real clothes instead of sleepers. I think it took me 20 minutes to dress them ... I won't be doing that very often. We have another birthday party this weekend, so hopefully the good behavior will continue.

Today, Matt and I went out to lunch ... wahooo the first time we've been out for a meal! We enjoyed Thai and then I went to hang out with my friend who has 8 month old twins. She has been a fabulous mentor and seems to clean her house of all boy items too small for hers and gives them to us. Thanks Stef!!

Matt's mom is arriving Thursday and splitting her visit between us and Daniel / Jill in Georgetown. Hopefully she is ready to change some poopy diapers!

To answer the question to last week's who's who ...... sorry Stacie & Ashley, Tyler is on left & Zach is on the right.

And for a few new pictures of the week ...

This barely lasted long enough for Matt to snap this picture of Zachary & Meigs
