Editor's Note: This is my blog. I'm allowed to rant and document some of the no-so-pleasantries of raising two.
While I have met some twin or triplet moms via message boards on the
interwebz, I don't have too many where I am close enough to know their
day-to-day successes and challenges. The past week has been full of a
few ups and what seemed like many downs for
myself and for the family.
Tyler was kept home for 3 days because of a cold, with a fever
spiking approximately every 8 hours, so day after day we had to keep him home. Man,
one kid is so f%^&ing easy, yet so sad because they want to be
together! While Matt and I both had one on one time with
T, it is laced with thoughts of how our life would be different had we had one at a time. There are so many fun things that we aren't able to
do alone and many day to day things we can't do alone.
For example, bath time is a two adult activity, each and every time
for the past year, and we don't see this changing anytime soon. There
has been one bath night in the past, oh 9 months, where they were good
listeners and it could have been accomplished
without injury or time outs (which isn't possible mid-soaping!) with
only one adult - 20/20 hindsight.
I can't take them to parks alone ... I can't take them on any lengthy
shopping trips or multi-stop errands ... I can't take them to indoor
play places, non-toddler friendly houses, or other fun things alone.
While I am constantly told, "oh they behave so
well," it's not that I can't, it's not SAFE for me to take them to
these places alone. They run in opposite directions without fail - no
joke. We met up with friends a year or so ago at a park and as we
walked in carrying them, we said to your friends, "Talk to you later." At the moment we set the boys down, we each watched "our kid" until we
crossed paths and switched, so I could get pictures of both! At the end
of the park visit, the friends looked at us and said, "They really do go
in opposite directions!!" While Matt will always
work some evenings and some day shifts and weekends, we have learned
how to make it work, but I feel sometimes that we are depriving T&Z
of experiences that will shape them, teach them, and give them joy.
They are little sponges and while I want them to have these
experiences, I can't jeopardize their safety or my sanity as their
mommy. Three will be a tough age, from what I hear, along with joys of
potty training, but hopefully times will get better.
We took advantage of a weekend day Matt had off and tried out the
National Zoo in DC. We arrived around 930a after hitting some traffic
on our way there. I wasn't impressed and didn't feel we saw that many
animals - they all seemed to be sleeping or hiding. The boys were only slightly excited
a few times and mostly just wanted to run away from us. Thankfully Uncle
Daniel & my cousin Jessie (who just started at GW in DC) joined us
so they helped manage the stroller while Matt and I chased and tried to
redirect to stay together. We left when they
started melting down about 2 hours after we arrived. They fell asleep
on the way home for 35 minutes and then played in their cribs for 2
straight hours instead of napping. Let's just say the afternoon was
less than stellar with lots of tears and whines.
We'll try again in a few months to see if they are ready for
excursions more than 20 minutes from the house .... until then I'll try
not to feel too defeated ....
Case in Point: Dinner tonight ... just hours ago .... grilled chicken aka poison!

2.40 We've had better weeks ....
By Cyndi
September 17, 2013
We've had better weeks and while I won't bore you with all of the less than great things that have occurred, I'll share a few.
On Friday during bath, Zach wasn't be a "good listener" so I had to hold him, brush quickly and take him staight to bed. I opened his faucet to full force to wet his tooth brush and slammed it down. Matt heard something like a toilet running but that wasn't it. I set Zach down quickly, realized it was coming from the master bathroom to find 1/2" of water and the toilet spraying everywhere!!! I yelled for Matt who helped turn off the toilet while I started soaking up the standing water with towels.
We threw the soaked towels in the master tub (never been used since we moved in) and drained it once we had finished. When we came downstairs to the main level, we found a wet ceiling and dripping. (Mind you, Friday night was the start of Yom Kippur, one of the most important Jewish holidays where we fast for 24 hrs).
Fast forward to Matt staying home from services and the plumber cutting a hole in the ceiling, replacing the intake pipe to the master toilet which was broken and finding that our pressure regulating incoming water to the entire house was BROKEN. Awesome ... another $500 down the tubes for house repairs ...
Then Tyler woke up with a fever Sunday after nap and a mucus-y cough which stayed with him into Monday morning and a high temp. Matt took Z to school and took T to the doctor who said his lungs were clear and dose claritan and mucinex and keep him home as long as he had a fever.
Let's just say the start of this Jewish year isn't the best and we can only hope it gets better as the year goes on!

2.39 Apple Picking & the Gimpel invasion!

Fall? Can it be?? Pumpkin Spice Lattes and cooler temps!
It is one of my favorite times of year, but it also brings worried thoughts of
being stuck inside for days and days when winter hits -- with two crazy
threenagers!!!
For now, we will enjoy being outside as much as we can!! We
celebrated Rosh Hashana with the Isaacs and enjoyed a tasty brisket and sides, along
with fresh challah
from a local bakery ... YUM!!
On Saturday, realizing we had nothing going on, made plans
and went apple and blackberry picking with friends. It turned out to be a great
afternoon and the weather was perfect!!! We picked over 30 apples and a pint of
blueberries. My first batch of apple sauce is made and more to come (& a
lovely request from Matt for an apple pie ... I'll get right on that?!)
On Sunday, my brother Dave, sister-in-law Lauren &
nephew Asher arrived. We had a great visit with them, playing, reading books,
and a quick trip for some fro-yo!! I had to work Monday , but Matt had the day off and spent
time at the park and more playtime.
They were our last set of visitors for a few weeks, but the
weekends aren't any less busy!! I am going to try to spend every last moment
outside while the weather is pleasant and save all indoor activities for the winter!
The next picture is real life and while I am able to get
great pictures of the boys, it is not easy and this is what most of our pictures
turn out like. Oh well, but you know this will be in their bar mitzvah
slideshow!!
(Editor's note: T&Z REJECTED applesauce because it was NOT FROM THE JAR ... the
jar that they are familiar with. Ugh, picky toddlers. But Asher gladly ate
almost two bowls full!!)

2.38 College & Kid Shenanegans
September 2, 2013
By Cyndi
It's the Monday of Labor Day weekend and we are in recovery mode. Our college friends Andrew & Rose and their two girls came to visit for the weekend!! While it went by so quickly, it was awesome to have them for a visit.
We started the weekend off with some backyard pool fun, dinner & some books before bedtime.
Sunday morning, we went to a local indoor playground and had a great time! It was $16 for two kids, but adults were free and we sure got our money's worth. We will definitely be headed back there again!
Again, we just spent some time in the backyard, though at 90 degrees and humid, we couldn't be out for too long. We had a great dinner and got the kids to bed, so the adults could enjoy the evening!!
