The past week was fairly normal, except for Tyler started limping. We first saw it slightly Tuesday night but as the week progressed the limp worsened on his right leg. Everything else about his daily activities were completely normal. Eating, sleeping, no bruising or any known trauma; he was running, jumping, bearing weight on the right side. When I saw him Friday night, I knew we needed to take him to the pediatrician on Saturday morning.
I called and got an early 845am appointment and Matt stayed home with Zach. After speaking to the pedi, she wanted to run blood work to elimate the possibility of infection and have hip x-rays. They poked my poor little guy twice and got almost no blood. At that point, they offered trying again or going to the ER and let them do all of it since its a "one stop shop". It wasn't where I wanted to spend the day, but knew we needed to eliminate all of worsts .... so off Tyler & I went. Pedi called ahead and after checking in they prepped a room with all of the blood viles etc. They wrapped him in a sheet as I tried to keep him distracted with the tv and they got the blood (3 viles) in about 1.5 minutes.
As you can see in the picture, they left the IV placement in, just incase they needed to do antibiotics later they didn't want to poke him again, knowning he came in being through two bad tries at the pedi. We went off for hip x-rays, waited a bit longer and then did an ultrasound of his hips. The local hospital we use has a children's side, which has decorated rooms with Mickey & staff that works with kids all the time. The ER doc provided me this list of her ideas of what the problem was, top being most likely and we would work to eliminate everything else. To be honest, I was freaked out, but just had to focus on Tyler staying on the bed and distracting him from the events.
About 3.5 hours after we arrived, we were cleared to leave, with the diagnosis of Viral Synovitis. Here's a great description: Click Here.
Over the past year, we have learned about many different things that can affect kids, that we never knew about.
- Random rash appears, with heavy concentration in the groin area, probably Strep
- Random rash on trunk but not really on extremities, with temp, probably Roseola
- Pedi can treat pneumonia with breathing treaments
- When asked by a doctor if your child is lethargic, do not say YES until he is totally unresponsive
- Xergen Temporal scanner is awesome for taking temperatures! When we only need to take one, the other guy asks to have his turn!
In other random happenings .... The boys love to dress up. They received some great new outfits for their birthday and love to wear them around the house!
