33 Weeks Old

By Cyndi
August 1, 2011

Before I begin, where did July go? Or for that matter, June?  I can not believe its already August, Matt has another birthday in less than two weeks.  And in 3.5 more weeks, the boys will have been enjoying the world on the outside longer than they were growing in my oven.

Phoenix was fabulous.  Flights there went well, other than that we had to have people move seats because we can not sit in the same row (there is not enough oxygen masks).  Tyler & Zach did well and didn't even notice we were landing.  My aunt, uncle & cousins were able to come for the weekend also.  They were a huge help to keep the boys entertained.  My dad had picked up all the necessary large items (pack n plays, booster seats, & exersaucer), so we were well equipped when we arrived.  My grandpa showed off the boys to every resident in his building and LOVED pushing their stroller.   We had professional pictures taken and once I receive the digital images, I will post some.  The trip back was a little less smooth, with the TSA deciding to search my entire diaper bag and the boys being slightly fussy on the flight.  Everyone survived and we will be doing it again in less than two weeks to visit the Cobbels in Dallas.  Meigs had a great stay at the PetHotel and spent 3 of his 4 days there playing with other dogs for 8 hrs straight!  That's a lot of butt sniffing :)

We are back on schedule, 7a to 7p, phew.  We had been shifting the schedule for Phoenix, but being back to normal is nice.  Both boys have two teeth now on the bottom.  The first one(s) broke the gum right before Phoenix and within a day the second was right there.  They are a little fussier and have runny noses - common with teething - but no other side affects.  We are quite lucky!

The boys have been trying more and more foods.  It is certain, they like fruit!  They have yet to reject any fruit.  As for vegetables, they are hit and miss, except for sweet potatoes.  Those are a hit!

Food Grade Date
Apples A 7/19/11
Bananas A  7/25/11
Peaches A 7/28/11

We scored a Craigslist stroller with many accessories.  Since the boys will grow out of the infant carriers any day now, we need to get moving on purchasing convertible car seats & another regular stroller.  These car seats and strollers should last for a few years!

Matt & I had our first date night since the boys were born.  We went to dinner at a fabulous restaurant, Blue Duck Tavern. Dinner was tasty and we followed it up with two desserts!  And to top off dinner, they comp'ed our corkage fee for the bottle of wine we brought!!  Then we headed to the Kennedy Center to see Wicked.  It was good, felt a little long, but that's probably because it went way past my bedtime.

My cute date for the evening

Chocolate Cake with Makers Mark flambe and Milk & Chocolate Banana S'mores

We are continuing to baby proof the house.  The first gate is installed and functioning.  Next is baby jail, I mean baby corral, in the basement so we can start using that level of the house also.  The honey-do list never seems to end, even though items are crossed off all the time.  Off to see what the boys do next!

Fastest post ever ... we survived the desert and made it to & from AZ without any major issues.  Great time was had by all.  Time to unpack, do some laundry, and start thinking about Dallas (we leave in two weeks)!

Cyndi's Aunt Jo, Uncle Jim & cousins Hillary & Jessie came from Chicago to enjoy the weekend with us

Proof that we were in AZ - a cactus picture!

And the reason we made the trip ... Great Grandpa Max finally meets Tyler & Zach

31 Weeks Old

By Cyndi
July 17, 2011

The past week has been spent baby proofing and preparing for visitors and our trip to AZ.  Matt has installed magnetic cabinet locks on all of the lower kitchen cabinets.  We need to pick up a few supplies to install the baby gates and hopefully we will atleast have the main level gate up this week.  This one is at the top of the list because Tyler and Zach and moving around more and more.  They are generally moving backwards, but the stairwell that leads to the basement needs to be gated.

We have also started shifting their schedule later to prepare for Phoenix.  This is a slow process, delaying their feedings 15min per day and then sticking to the 3 hr schedule during the daytime.  So far so good.  We hope they will at least sleep until 5a or 6a PDT, but we'll adjust as needed (we don't have any other options).

We have continued on our food adventure with a few more vegetables.  We will begin fruits later this week.  Then we will slowly continue to add to the list.  So far, no allergic reactions!

Food Grade Date
Peas D 7/2/11
Green Beans B+ 7/5/11
Carrots C 7/9/11
Sweet Potatoes B 7/12/11
Butternut Squash A- 7/16/11

Now onto teething.  Ugh, they are cranky on and off all day long.  Zach actually has his lower right almost broke the gum and Tyler is not far behind.  I haven't broken down and used Motrin yet, only frozen wash clothes & frozen teething toys.

Nana arriving late this evening for a few days, with Saba arriving for an evening before flying out ahead of us to AZ to prepare for our visit.  It will be a busy next two weeks for us.  Followed by Matt & my first visit to the Kennedy Center in DC to see Wicked (a DATE NIGHT FOR US!!! & an advanced thank you for Todd & Stacie for babysitting).

7 month pictures

Trying to take a picture of Zach's swollen gums

Zach "eating" ... he lets it sit there for 10+ seconds like he doesn't know what to do

We often find them under the chair ... oops!

Proof we MUST have the baby gates up asap ... they are about to crawl!

30 Weeks Old & Doc Band Before and After

July 11, 2011
By Cyndi

I'm not sure I will be able to follow up Matt's post from last week, but he did a great job making our life sound interesting!  The past few weeks, the boys have really started to enjoy tummy time.  They will stay down there sliding, rolling around and spinning in a circle for 30+ minutes between each feeding.  They are moving themselves backwards right now.  It looks like any day, they will figure out how to move forward.

We are also beginning the teething phase.  Nothing has some through, but they are much fussier than normal.  We have been trying a new solid every three days.  Here's the summary:

Grading Scale Definitions
A Love
B Like
C Palatable
D Eat if forced
F Allergic

Food Date Grade
Peas 7/2/2011 D
Green Beans 7/5/2011 B+
Carrots 7/9/2011 C

We had one last visit with Cranial Technologies for their before and after scans.  They were not able to give us digital images, but we were allowed to take pictures.  Hopefully the following pictures will show you the amazing improvements and why we chose this treatment for both boys.

The above picture is Tyler.  With he before picture (left) the back left and front right is where his flat spot was.  With the picture on the right (exit appointment picture) he is much more rounded & filled out.

This is Zach's mug shot.  It's funny.  Yes, they put a light stocking cap over their heads to keep their hair down to take these pictures.

The above picture is Zach's before (left) and after (right).  Zach's flat spot was the back right and front left, opposite of Tyler.  He was not as severe as Tyler in his measurements, so it is harder to see in this picture.

7 month pics to follow later this week.  The rest of July will be quite busy.  Nana arrives on Sunday, staying through Thursday morning.  Saba arrives Tuesday evening but flies to Phoenix on Wednesday morning to prep for our visit.  Yup, we are flying again so Tyler & Zach can meet Great Grandpa Max in two weeks!

29 Weeks Old

July 5, 2011
By Matt

It's been awhile, but your favorite guest blogger is back with fresh insight into raising twins. So let's get down to business.

The boys are now 29 weeks old, just a little shy of 7 months. People have been saying, "Wow, can you believe it's been that long?" Yes I believe it! Feels like I should be on to a second home, second career, and second wife by now. Only kidding, Cyndi, only kidding! It's really not that bad, but when you're just waiting for the crawling/walking/teething to begin already, time does not seem to go by quickly. And yes, I know I should enjoy this time with them while they are not mobile enough to get themselves into trouble, and I am. It will just be nice when they can do a few more things for themselves, like eating, changing their own diapers and grabbing themselves a beer grabbing me a beer.

Speaking of eating, they tend to do well in this department, though not without some struggle. Both boys want to constantly hit the bottle while eating, essentially pushing it away from their mouths while still trying to suck. Somewhat comical but frustrating at the same time. The rice/oatmeal cereal has gone over well; I have found they like listening to music while eating their cereal in the late mornings. Or, more accurately, they just enjoy me dancing (poorly) to keep them entertained. I think they like the techno and progressive beats. Baby glow sticks are on order. The constant spit-up that was so prevalent when they were newborns has largely subsided, unless I'm playing with them while they lay on my chest with me on my back. No matter how many hours it has been since they last ate or how many strategically placed burp cloths I have covering me, the end result is always the same: shirt in laundry.

Until someone was asking me recently about upcoming vacations at work, I did not realize how dumb (weather-wise) we are regarding our summer trips. Phoenix at the end of July and Dallas in mid-August. Heat on top of more heat. Are those areas of the country even safe for children under 5 years old in the summer? Doesn't the American Academy of Pediatrics have a 'no child-making' warning out between November and February each year for those areas so as not to subject newborns to those extreme conditions in the dead of summer? It will be a good time though, seeing family on both sides in AZ and good friends in Texas. At least I'll have a precursor to hell!

Along with being good eaters, we have two very good sleepers as well. They generally take good naps during the day and then at night they go down around 7p and don't wake until we go to gather them at 7a. Both boys prefer to sleep on their stomachs, oftentimes faceplanting themselves onto the crib sheet and then not moving for hours on end. We know they do not veer from that position because in the morning the cheeks or sometimes nose and middle of forehead are very red from remaining in that one position. How they can be facedown for more than 2 minutes I do not understand - maybe it is due to not having a huge schnoz like their father .....yet. Sorry about that in advance, boys!

So Cyndi and I have been trying to get back into our running routine by running with the boys in the jogging stroller, though training on a less rigorous regimen. This past week I went by myself with the boys for the first time. About halfway through I passed a woman walking her dog, and as I passed she said, "How do you have the energy?" I was not quick enough to spit out something witty, so I just shrugged my shoulders and smiled. She then called after me, "they're beautiful!" I was too far down the sidewalk to stop, flex, do a few one-armed pushups, point to myself and slap her with a "Abooyaa!!" We saw some neighbors a few days later who had yet to see the boys. Yes, our neighborhood is not too social, as these neighbors we know only by their nicknames - Snoopy and Mr. Snoopy. This label has been bestowed upon them because her car has Snoopy seat covers. The Snoopies have a 2 year old Snoopy and a newborn Snoopy. Anyway, we were chatting with them for a few minutes after a run with the boys, and Snoopy looked at them and said that from the nose up, T&Z look like Cyndi, and from the nose down, they look like me. How do people see this? Reminds of the perfect line for when people ask who their baby looks like, courtesy of Kramer via Seinfeld. His response: Lyndon Johnson.

Speaking of neighbors, our squabbling friends have been unusually quiet in recent months, other than the steady stream of guests they seem to entertain every weekend. No iPod arguments, no Jimmy Choos thrown through the walls. There was some noise just outside the front door late in the evening after I got home from work this past week, so I strolled over to the peephole to take a look. They were moving furniture out at 11:15p. WTF? A few days later Cyndi calls me at work and all excitedly asks if I could have seen nursery items being moved into the neighbors' home. Nope, I was sure it was office furniture and it was exiting their abode. Cyndi had apparently seen a box on their doorstep from a well-known maternity company and immediately did some "investigating" - others might call it "stalking." [Editor's Note: I only started the investigation after Stacie also noticed the box and texted me saying something about how she seemed bustier than normal lately.] She was able to ascertain that they are pregnant, are registered at Babies R Us, she is 20 weeks along, it's a boy and are due in November. All of this within about 3 minutes and all without talking to any member of the pregnant family. Maybe you missed your calling, babe.

The following picture is this month's submission for me to win Father of the Year. A group of fraternity brothers who all have children 2 years old or less have entered into a contest to see who is, in fact, the man most ill-suited to care for his children unsupervised. Have no worries though as I have no shot at winning this title because
1. a certain contestant is a natural at boning things up
2. refer to reason #1 whose initials may or may not be A.C.
3. I'm a natural at being awesome. So there.

[Editor's Note Continued: If this guest blogger is requested to blog more often, his wonderful first wife will deny the request because of the time required for him to write and the backlog of housework. Love you too, honey!]

Feed Me ....

July 3, 2011
By Cyndi

We tried a real food today, besides rice/oatmeal cereal.  We warmed two ice cubes of homemade pureed peas (equals 1/4 cups or 2 fl oz) and they ate every bit of it!  Plus, they had their normal rice cereal in the morning.  These boys like to eat!!

A few more days of peas and then we will move to green beans.  And a quick video ...
